New FLywheel

i have an 86 z-28. it has a built 356 in it, but i am currently using the stock flywheel. i have been reading about light weight flywheels and was curious on anyone else that may have a lightweight flywheel in the cars?

in know the stock flywheel is 27-32lbs, and the new flywheel is could be as light as 15lbs.

can anyone give me some insight on the pros and cons of a lighter flywheel. also can anyone recommend places to buy one from.

i know the lightweight flywheels come in aluminum and lightened steel. i was interested in the lightened steel one. (trying to keep cost down).

any info would be great. thanks

GM still sells the 15 pounder (my cost $183, I believe). These were used stock in L69 cars--and other GM cars. You might consider a search.

The stock flywheel on some 305 4-barrels, the slow ones, was 27 lbs. The stock flywheel on others, the fast ones (L69 and LB9 specifically) was about 16 or 17 lbs. That's the one James is talking about.

Both are stock.

As I say, I purchased mine directly from GM. The part # is 14085720. Check the following link for another option (shipping is stiff):

I would check with the maufacturer of the flywheel. Im not totally sure, but I think a heavier fly in a 3500 lb. car, with a mild engine.
Then there is the lightweight fly, in a 3500 lb. car with a stroker yielding good torque numbers. The makers can shed some light, as there are a few things to consider. Too light, or too heavy with the wrong combo, would not be desireable.

Try SPEC, McCloed. These are two reputable sources.
