i just put in a posi and 3.42, i have the backlash at about 13/1000. now ive heard this can be both exceptable and too much. it does have quite a bit of whine. does anyone have any input?

That's too much. .005" - .008" is better.

What pinion shim did you use? What kind of gears?

It should be all but inaudible. No stock type gear set should whine.

my pinion depth is fine. the recommended backlash is somewhere between 7 and 12 thousands. the gear set and posi is out of my friends '02 ta which only had about 10,000 miles on it at the time he took it out. the gears already whined before he pulled it all out. im probably gonna pull it out and shim it over a little bit but i wanted some opions first

If the bearings are new, use less backlash. Those numbers look like the recommended ones for used bearings (check while in service, not a rebuild spec).
