Just hook up the tranny to the engine and tilt it up like you're going to put on the x-member. Put some plastic wrap over the shifter plate area, then drill pilot holes from underneath and dremel the rest out and sand lightly to remove burrs. You'll have an exact match. It's about 2" rearward.

ok. was going to do that.. but was trying to size up the job.. I dont have a cross member yet, so it will be a bit tricky by my self.

Don't need a crossmember, entirely. Just stick a jack under it with a block of wood and jack it up, or use a tranny jack. Keep the jack there till you get your crossmember. If a hydraulic jack, pump it a few of times a day, so it doesn't bleed down and leave the tranny hanging there (breaking your dist cap).

It was a little over an inch in my car. Maybe 1¼". Obviously it could vary slightly from one to another. Cut the least you can, so that the boot will still cover the hole, if possible.

I put my T-56 in, and it was slightly lower than the floor pan; I duct-taped over the shifter flange in the ext hsg, and cut it out just until the shifter would clear with some wiggle room (I think it was probably about ¼". Which reminds me, the shifter you use will also affect how much you have to cut; it hangs out past the trans flange by some amount.
