i heard that misalignment of the pinion and ring gears can do that, as well as chips on the teeth

Crush collar crushed more than it's installed dimentions due to hard launches is the most likely culprit. Is it leaking at the pinion seal?

Come to think of it, it ould be other things too.

Does your friend know the history of the car, rear end work in paticular? If the gears were not set up right initially that would do it. Used gears not set up exactly as their initial install will do it. Will never get rid of the whine either without replacing the gears. Might quiten it down a bit by resetting them but never get rid of the whine completely without replacing them

if it's a hunting or semi-hunting gearset (depends on ratio)and it was removed and re-instsalled without the gears in the same position it will make noise
