How do you remove the speedo gear?

I am trying to swap out a tranny and I have a metal gear on my new tranny. I have the replacement plastic gear. How do you remove the metal gear and install the plastic one? My old tranny has a plastic one on it too (wrong color one now), can't get it off either. Help.

What's the new and what's the old tranny?
Are you trying to replace the drive gear or driven gear?

Sounds like he's trying to remove the drive gear. Try this link, it's a guide for removing and installing new speedometer gears: http://sethirdgen.org/vss.htm

Hey, thanks for the link. The gear I was trying to remove is the drive gear. My new tranny came with a metal one that would not work with my new driven gear. I ended up calling the guy that sold me the new tranny and he said to take a cold chisel and give it a whack and it would come right off. I was a little hesitant about doing this but he said it wouldn't hurt the tranny. So, I did just that. It took about 10-15 whacks but it did break and slide right off. The new gears went right on fairly easily. Maybe now I can stop guessing what speed I am going using my tach.

Too bad I saw this post too late. I just went through this yesterday, I picked up a rebuilt trany and it had the metal gear and my tranny had the plastic gear. I went to Autozone and for free rented a Three Jaw Gear puller, metal one came off easy
