I have a rear end out of a 84 H.O. camaro. the castings said it has a posi with 3.73 gears. i opened the cover and did not see any springs or clutches. the gears still are 3.73. Do all camaro's have the same size rearend gears 7.5 or 8.5 i don't know what i have. do i have to measure it? any help would be appriciated. thanks

 

It's a 7.5. All 82-up Camaros have that, except for ones with the 9-bolt (some had that in 86 or so up to 89) and a very very few with a Dana 44. So few of those, it's not worth worrying about.

3.73 open was real common back then. That's how my 83 HO car came. It's probably better that way though; alot of them that had "posi", it was actually an Eaton Gov-Lock. Basically, shrapnel from the future. Although the open that was in the car, somehow miraculously turned to shrapnel one day... go figure....

Count the teeth. Ignore the codes. 3.73 will have 11 on the pinion and 41 on the ring.

 

There are some #'s stamped on the Ring Gear. Just turn the ring until you find them. Like what was said above, if you have 3.73's you will find 41, 11 stamped on the Ring Gear. Just devide the larger # by the smaller # you find on the ring gear.
