700-R4 Only leaks when not running.
I just recently replaced my 700R4 Trans with one from my parts car. I have put a new oil pan, and gasket, rear main seal, and trans cooler lines are dry.
The odd part about it is that the car stops leaking if i start it, and will start again when i stop it. You can actually see the leak slow down and stop when the car starts and runs.
The car did not leak at all when sitting on my driveway (which is on a hill)
I am unfortunately thinking that I have to drop the Trans again and put a new front main.
I was wondering if anyone else has come across this problem before, so I know what the problem is before i go dropping a transmission again.
Thanks,

When the car isn't running, the converter drains back raising the fluid level in the pan.
I'd look for leaks where the dipstick tube and shift cable (throttle) enter the case. Very common places for leaks to develop. Both seals are fairly easy to replace.
Might also be coming from the converter seal.
Rule of thumb: Whenever installing a used transmission, replace the front seal, tailshaft seal and bushing. Cheap insurance from having to pull the tranny a second time.

only possible explanation i could think of is the pan itself.. and when the engine is running of coarse, sucking up the oil so it is below the leak point on the pan, prolly a bad seal between the pan and tranny.

I have put 2 different pans on the transmission.. and 2 new seals.. I just don't understand.
I'll check out the dipstick before i go tear out the trans.. but i'm pretty sure it's the front main.

I have experienced this problem myself twice. The first time it was due to a worn out front pump bushing, etc. The second time was due to improper assembly of the front pump following replacement of the bushing, the pump halves were not properly aligned during assembly which resulted in the pump being misaligned in the case, and the pum/case seal ring not sealing.
In any event, the trans will need to be removed and the front pump bushing replaced.
