The extension housing has to come off first.

Before that, the little block thing that the end of the shifter fits in, has to come off.

Get yourself a 1/8" pin punch, and drive the little roll pin in that holds the block to the rail, SLOWLY AND GENTLY; go just a little at a time, until the block is free to slide off the round shift rail shaft. Looking at the shaft, it should be pretty obvious how far you need to drive it. DO NOT drive it too far, or you will never be able to get it apart.

Once you've done that, turn the trans up on its front end on top of something so that it's sitting on the case, not on the clutch gear or the clutch gear bearing retainer; and remove the ext hsg. When you get that off, the block will fall out (along with a ball and a spring); drive the roll pin all the way out of the block.

Then remove all the bolts from the "inspection cover", and it will lift off.
