Manual 4 speed to a 5 speed???
Manual 4 speed to a 5 speed???
I have an 82 Firebird with a manual 4 speed, I would like to swap out the 4 speed manual tranny for a 5 speed manual tranny (T-5). is this a straight forward swap or am I going to need a diff bellhousing or other misc parts??? anyone familiar with this swap please reply.

well my friend did the exact opposite of your swap, he went from a 5 speed to a 4 speed. he need a new bellhousing, flywheel, crossmember, and the mechanical linkage. so i'm assuming you would need the same parts off the t-5, only obviously substituting hydraulic lines for the mech linkage. you may also possibly need the driveshaft, i'm not sure if the lenghts are any different.

Dont necessarily need the hydraulics... in '83, the T5 cars used a mechanical clutch linkage. Mine does.
the T-5 sounds like it would bolt right up to the iron duke, I will just have to see if I can pick up a parts car with a 5 speed in it I guess. kind of regret getting rid of the 2 t-5 setups I had in the past, but then at that time I hadn't owned my 82 4 banger.

that swap was part of my winter project and there is a ton of stuff you need to change to get it to work
you need a new bellhousing, trans, shifter, crossmember( i just modified mine) torque arm(4-speed one is too long), t-5 torque arm mount/bushing, driveshaft(4-speed is longer by quite a bit), however if you have the mechanical clutch linkage it will work with no modification. thats all I can remember,
hope it helps
