if youve done a gear swap lately and have a set of 308's kicking around just collecting dust or that you were going to throw out, i could use them.

I've got a set but the last time I looked, they had some rust on them
There's also a set of 3.42's not being used.

thanks cartman... i guess it depends on how bad the rust is. i'd be throwing them into a rear so theyd need to be useable. i dont need the 3.42's (have a few sets already), if camaro350 can put them to use, you can send them his way
snake, look me up when you pull them out. if i dont find a set before then i'll be interested. just dont throw them out, i'll probably take them anyways...

88Camaro350, I'll pull the cover on the rear today and see how they look.
lunatic_magnet, gonna do the same with the 3.08 set and see if it's just surface rust that can be cleaned off.

Sorry for taking so long to get back... The 3.42 gears look good but the 3.08 rear has had it. The water has gotten inside and after sitting for a few years, it's no good.

Think 3.42s would be to much on the interstate with a th350?
Plans changed slightly since this post was made. I killed my 700r4 and I ordered a TCI street fighter th350....
I may still take them though. Wonder what I would rev at on the highway?

I would say that the 3.42 would be a bit steep without overdrive. I run 3.55s in my '67 stang with a C4, and at 70 MPH that little 289 is screaming at about 3,000, which is too much. Typically I don't drive it on the interstate, so it isn't a big deal. It's an around town car that I drive maybe three times a year, and having the added punch out of the hole is well worth it.

You get next shot if 88Camaro350 doesn't want them
btw, I drove around for about 4 years with the 3.42 gears and a combo of the stock TH200c and the current TH400 trans, both 3 speeds. Never had a problem on the highway with the 3.42's. I made a couple of 200 mile round trips to the drag strip and back plus had gone on some nice drives. I was getting about 20 to 22 mpg with the 305 on the highway. 4.56 gears are a different story hehe, tend to take it slower than I used to if I get on the highway.

I will take them. I don't drive my car on the interstate much either so I should be ok. Let me know how much you want for shipping.

Why in the need for small gears? Seems like people usually want to get bigger ones. Although it seems like there are alot of people on here running faster with 2.77s then 3.27s

Keep in mind that lower (numerically) gears offer less torque multiplication. This means a softer hit off the line. When running street tires at the drags it's usually a fight to get the car to hook up. Lower gears allow an easier launch, and if you've got the motor to make up the time down the track you'll run quicker than a car that blows the tires off at the starting line all things being equal. Once the tires start spinning the run is all over. You'll never get a good run like that.
For example, with my car 1st and 2nd gear are basically useless. I have to baby the car out of the hole, then granny shift 2nd, towards the top of 2nd I can start to get my foot into it, then bang 3rd, run 3rd hard, bang 4th, and I'm through the traps at like 3,500 RPM. If I drive stupid or the track is slick I can spin the tires to 1/2 track with ease. I need some slicks...

due to a gear rule, we cant run anything higher than a 4.56 in the rear. to get the car to run well, the final ratio needs to be around 5.15. so you run the car in second gear. i have a 1.68 second gear in the car.
3.08s would give me a 5.17 ratio in second gear. with 3.23's in the rear my ratio jumps to 5.42 - too much gear for the track.
i imagine i could go buy a new set... but no one really uses 3.08's in their street cars. so if i can pick up a used set someone doesnt want for $25, that benefits everyone.

I've got a set of 2.73's out of a 91 rear that should be perfect, theyr'e still closed up in the rear, didn't whine, ran perfect.
