is this guy ripping me off? what to pay for posi carrier...
im just wondering... i thought it was a good deal when a local drivetrain shop confirmed that my stock non limited slip rear end is nearly completely shot and quoted me this price.
to keep my 10 bolt in place and change to a auburn pro-series 7.5, 28 spline 3.73 limited slip carrier he said 1600 for parts and 250 for labour?
now that ive been shopping around im seeing them for 400-600 with gears!
is he just overcharging me big on the parts to earn more labour, and quoting me low on the labour to fool me thinking its a good deal or does this sound about right to you?
any opinions would be great. i dont want to get ripped off.
also does that sound like the right carrier for an 87z or would it be a 26 spline?

I wouldnt even call the shop back. That is insulting.
My eaton limited slip cost $350, RIchmond 3.23 (3.73s are cheaper) cost $170, bearings, seals, shims, oil, ect maybe $100 if you splurge.
So it cost me around $600 in parts. But I bought all the necessary tools to do it myself so it actually ran me about $800.

That's a little bit predatory on parts.... if he goes with top-of-the-line stuff, it's $200 for gears, $100 for the kit, $400 for the posi, $250 for the axles, $75 for misc stuff (fluid, pinion bearing spacer, etc.), $175 for a girdle type of cover, $25 for cap studs; that's $1225. Dana gears, Superior axles, Ratech small parts, T/A cover, ARP hardware.
$250 for labor is about right.
Sure, you can jam a posi and a set of gears in a rear for $600 in parts; and that's fine as far as it goes; on the other hand, you can also maximize the rear. That list of parts I gave you, plus a set of LCA reloc brackets and welding up the tubes, all done to a PBR disc rear (I wouldn't spend that kind of money on an inferior core), will take that rear as far about as it can go in terms of greatest durability. If that's what he's doing, he's not too horribly far off.
On the other hand, a brand-new 12-bolt or 9" is only about $2200-2500 by the time you get it installed, depending on what you start out with and what you want to end up with.

eaton. it's rebuidable, so if it ever wears out, you can fix it and keep going. get moser or strange axles. use synthetic gear lube, richmond gears (not the noisy race ones), and arp hardware and a girdle cover. I'd also recommend good bearings. NAPA actaully sells a kit for $105 that has all the bearings, shims, wear-pattern dope, a pinion nut, crush sleeve, and all. it's all timkin or SKF bearings, so it's good stuff. but you need to invest in good parts on this, or junk it and get a 12 bolt or 9".
