what kind of posi did the 86 irocs w/ 5 speed come with? an auburn, or an eaton?
is it the same with 87s?

The relatively few that came with a posi, mostly came with Auburns.

IIRC in 87 the IROCs that got posi, mostly got 9-bolts.

Take off your cover and look. That's the only way to be sure what you've got; or if you even have posi. Forget the "2 stripes" or "turn one wheel ..." crap, and go straight to the source.

Then you'll know what brand is in it, if it has one at all.

There's nothing to rebuild in a Zexel. It doesn't use clutches.

First, you need to know, if you don't already, whether your 86 rear is a 9-bolt or a 10-bolt. Parts don't interchange between the 2. Be absolutely positively sure of what you've got before you buy stuff for it.

Second, like I said, there's nothing to "rebuild" in a Zexel. If you're just bound and determined to "rebuild" something, don't get one of those. Get something else, that has features that are meaningful to "rebuild".

Third, any Zexel you're likely to find, will have 28-spline side gears, so as you mentioned, you'd definitely be needing to replace them. I don't know that Zexel has ever made ANY 26-spline units.

Fourth, you can't get parts to "rebuild" a posi out of a 86 Camaro. Either it's an Auburn, in which case they don't sell the parts; or it's an Eaton Gov-Lock, in which case it needs ALOT more than a "rebuild" to be worth anything, like, some complete other model of carrier; or it's a 9-bolt, in which case it will only be useful if you have a 9-bolt, and you can't get parts to "rebuild" it, but you can get shims to tighten it up if it's just worn out and loose (as they often are) but not massively trashed.

first. i know the difference between a 9 and 10 bolt and i know parts dont interchange.
second. i know the zexel doesnt have clutchpacks in them. i was just asking cuz i wasnt sure
third. i dont have my heart set on rebuilding a unit. who wants to go out and rebuild stuff. hence my question. if a zexel is strong enough that it wont break, then i dont care if i have to rebuild it or not. an eaton however i know i can rebuild so i would rather have one of those then an auburn.
fourth. i know i would have to change axles. as i stated above.
fifth. zexel does not have a 26 spline unit. they are a 4th gen unit, and in 89 or so all the 10 bolts had 28 spline axles.

my question is this: How strong is a zexel?
