Car: 82 trans am (knight rider)
Engine: 305 Carb
Transmission: 4 speed (want an automatic)
t-5 or t56 bolt up?

right now i have a 4 speed mechanical not hydraulic....how hard is it change to a 5 or 6 speed....are the drivesafts still the same length ect...

Axle/Gears: 3.73, 3.90, 4.88, 3.55, 3.54, 7.00
I'm not sure about the driveshafts. The '82 is kind of an odd duck. It has mechanical linkage and either a Saginaw or T10 4-speed.

Your best bet would be to convert the car to hydraulic linkage.

Both the T5 and T56 will bolt up to the motor. You can get a stock flywheel for your 2-piece RMS enigne for use with the T5. To use the T56 you need a Centerforce or McLeod flywheel to make the clutch system work.

Both the T5 & T56 use the same torque arm and driveshaft.

The T5 can be done with all stock parts. The T56 requires a few special parts and is a more complicated and expensive swap.

If you go with the T5 try to get an '88-up WC unit, as they are stronger. If you choose the T56 get a '94-'97 F-car trans. Stay away from the '93 T56 with it's tall 1st gear (not as strong, and gears aren't spaced as well).
