help with rear and guages
OK, i have a 1985 z28 with a carb'd 400 (1977, with 67' 327 double hump heads) and a 700R4 tranny. I dont know alot about computers in cars. But im guessing some of the computer is left, cause my orginial guages work, except for that the oil pressure has been replaceed with a mech guage. What im wanting to do, is put an aluminum plate over my old dash face, and put some nice mechanical guages in it. (oil, water, speedo, rpm, volts).
Now, what im concerened about, is can i just hook mech. guages up to what the orignal guages are connected to, or do i have to run all new lines? not sure what to do here. all i know is....... who needs a computer in a car!!! lol
also, any recomindations on a rear? i currently have a 2.72 and im hating this, im wanting either 3.42 3.73 or 4.10
This isnt a daily driver. but more of a street project toy.
not interested in doing 140,. but 0-70.
I was told that with that tranny , the 3.73 is too low and i cant even use 1st gear. id like to make use of all my gears, since i did jut install a mega shifter.
thanks, brandon, 23

An 85 Z28 has electrical gauges, but they're not computer controlled. That would mean that if you run mechanical gauges, you have to run everything new. The Speedo is the only mechanical gauge.
Take temp for instance. It's just wiring and a sending unit on the block. You can just run a new electrical gauge instead of a mechanical gauge, it's a lot easier. Run some wire and new sending unit.
Covan's Classics makes a harness so you can run all new aftermarket gauges and it'll wire directly into the factory dash harness.
