funny noise from rear end.....

Hi all, iv got a funny noise coming from the rear end of my bird, when driving along slowly if i have the window open i hear it. its like somone is droppong small ball bearings on say a brake drum or something. i have jacked up the back end , took off the weels , took off the brake drums and they are as they should be. refitted them and gave them a spin by hand and couldnt hear the noise so it seems it only hapens when the weight of the car is on the wheels, could it be my rear axle? how much slack should be on the drive shaft? i put the car in gear and tried to turn both weels the same way a little and noticed they would turn about 1" back and forth, is this normal?

thanks for any help
