Moser 9" install instructions w/lt1 brakes?

Hey guys. I need to put my axles into my moser 9", and was kind of curious how it all goes together. I got mine setup for LT1 brakes, and it looks like the bearing fits onto the axle and relies on the back braking plates to "retain" them in. Also, what about a seal? just the bearing seal?

My axles came with a little steel "ring" that sits on them. What is this "ring" or spacer for?

Thanks a lot guys.

I am not sure exactly what ring you mean but on some rear disk swaps there is a ring that goes inside the hole in the caliper bracket. The hole is big enough to let the bearing through and therefore the retainer wouldn't press on the bearing without it.

there should be some 9bolt (yes, 9bolt) bearing replacment pictures around here which are "almost" identical to how yours needs to be.

if I remember correctly there is a plate that goes on the flange end of the axle then the seal, next the bearing and then a spacer that keeps everything in place. I think the spacer and bearing get pressed on

The closest link with pics I could find is this:

is this what you are talking about in terms of similarities w/9bolt?

Thanks.

Very interesting.

What did you tell Moser when your ordered the axle? A few weeks ago one of their techs explained to me that the *only* brakes they could use were the '99-'02 brakes. Anything else would NOT work. If I wanted something else I would have to buy aftermarket or Ford brakes.

As far as I know everything still uses the GM car bolt pattern. This means that if the axle is built correctly and uses a flush bearing end, then any 10-bolt disc brakes should work. If they use the older style GM end with the protruding bearing then any brakes that can be bored to hold the bearing should work.

Do you know exactly what housing end they used when they made your axle?

I think the assembly order is spacer, backing plate, bearing, and bearing retaining ring. I remember hearing something from a 4th gen guy about having an 1/8" spacer that went under the bearing to push the axle out a hair.

The only thing I told them was a third gen diff w/lt1 brakes and 31 spline axles. That's it.

From all the things I have read I am starting to believe they have a few bad techs. I knew what they were saying couldn't be right. He wasn't very informative or helpful either. He just wanted to get rid of me as soon as he found out I was one of those F-body customers.

I would ask you who sold you the axle, but its a little late for me. I have already purchased parts to build up my own axle, and some of those parts were custom made for me or sold to me at rock bottom prices by friends. Dropping the new plans and going back to a high dollar axle would turn more than one friend red.

OK here is Howthey actually bolt on.....the brake plates are almost meaningless..

I do not have LT1 brakes...I used wilwood>>>BUT the axle has a Plate thats put on it before the bearing is pressed on...that retainer plate is what actually retains the alxe...

NOW for instance on my setup the brake bracket goes on frist>>>then the axle and retainer go in...then the nuts sandwich them all together... On mine when discussing it up front with Moser I had them cut a hole in each axle face that allows a 3/4 socket to pass through....this allows me to easily bolt the stuff on... My setup is rather difficult because its the wilwood 12" disk/drum setup...where the drum is an e-brake and disk is primary brake.. I can snag some pics to illustrate what Im talking about..

Thanks for your reply. Pics would be unreal in my situation. To make matters worse, I think that Moser forgot to send me the "retaining" plates, so all I got is my stock LT1 backing plates.

My setup is at a shop where the gears are getting set up. I am trying to collect as much info as I can for the guy, so I can go there and show him some pics/diagrams on how to do it, so he can do it once and do it right.

Thanks a lot.

Well pics may be difficult to post because I will not be removing my axles....BUT here is 1 better Read here...here are the ON-line instructions for installation of the wilwood kit I have....It shows step by step what to do and gives layout drawngs for whats happening..ALSO it gives you a guide so you know what Flange is welded to your axle tube.

http://static.summitracing.com/globa...s/140-7140.pdf

that shows the retainer...My kit used option A>>>full circle retainer..... MOSER did not forget to send you the retainer...It comes with the brakes.. Or you have to modify a stock 9" retainer.. Thats why moser does not offer options for many brake kits..

Oh and some free advice..to all when reading it...Im not sure if that part number on the instructions is correct....I did not have my exact kit number handy...I just would NOT want anyone to order the kit number on the instructions thinking it was right...I cant remember which offset I got...I coordinated the part numbers with moser themselves to get the right offsets for the rear..
