Does anyone know how many quarts of fluid goes into a 700R4 with a new torque converter? The thing is bone dry along with the new converter. It has a stock pan. It has an extra cooler but that is easy to figure out. The reason I ask is because my manual does not say and the new Flexible dipstick I bought isn't really easy to read. Not to mention that my house is on the side of a hill with no level place around really. I was guessing around 10 qts.

 

put at least one or two quarts in the convertor first before putting on

when changing the filter, that takes about 4 quarts itself, the t-cooler is about 1/4 to 1/2 quart depending

so i'd say at least 8 minimum but you need to get it warmed up and on a level place for proper level, becare not to overfill.

Thanks, I put a quart of fluid in the converter and I bought a drain plug too. Do you know if over filling it is better than underfilling or vice versa? I have had a tranny before with low fluid and it just didn't shift but what will overfilling do?

 

It actually holds just about 11 quarts.

Do like Don said, and put a couple of quarts in the converter before you put it on; then after it's all in and ready to start up, put about 5 more quarts into the pan; then add more up to a total of 10 quarts, as fast as you can, while it's idling after you start it up; then top it off after you drive it a mile or 2 and get it up tp temp.

 

Thanks fellas, I have already put in a quart in the converter. It is in place now. All I have left to do is put in the driveshaft and hook up my flexible tranny lines and put in the fluid. I ended up buying tranny fluid in gallon containers this time instead of quarts. No big deal though just going to be harder to pour is all. Thanks again.

 

11 qts and sometimes more. I usually have 14 qts on hand for a fresh trans.
