Tranny slipage

Just got this car. It is an 88 305TPI IROC with a 700R4. It drives great but the tranny slips. The detent cable is probably screwed but I was hoping you guys could help in diagnosis

When I drive the car and floor the engine revs as though the trans is slipping in and out and then catches and the car takes off
real hard It also does this at part throttle but not as violent. The converter locks up but takes a little longer to do than my Formula and the Formula runs great. Could it be the TV cable
or is a better bet that the tranny or torque converter are shot? Would low fluid or nasty fluid cause this? By nasty I mean the 170K mile original nastiness is how it looks!

Check the fluid level, and smell of it, see if it smells burnt or not.

Good to see someone else from NE TN. Yeah i think that could be your problem, check that, and then adjust the tv cable.
