TH350 w/ speed vendor overdrive vs. built 700R4

Well, tranny isn't going to last long, I got everything running again and the tranny slips. I took it to the shop and ask them about a rebuild, they told me they didn't want to rebuild it and see me in another couple of months. I guess 700-r4's aren't built to take 500hp all day, they recommended a bullet proof th350 with a speed vendor overdrive, I don't exactly understand how it works but they said they could build one that would last me years and could handle upwards of 900hp without a slip.

Yeah sure, and they make out on that deal like a bandit. What you're dealing with is a trans shop that doesn't like 700R4s, and there are a lot of them out there. They are steeped in tradition, and have PG/TH350/TH400 on the brain. The truth is that they are just ignorant about the 700R4, and don't know how to make them hold up. They have probably built some in the past with either stock internals or the same parts they use in TH350s and expect the same results. 700R4s require a different approach, and different parts that have been designed specifically for the 700R4, not just parts that work well on a TH350 adapted to fit a 700R4.

You can easily buld a 700R4 to 575HP. You need a rebuild kit from Pro-Built www.700r4l60e.com

This kit addresses and fixes all the 700R4s weak links. It includes all clutches, steels, pump guts (10-vane), Vette servo, TransGo shift reprogramming kit, bushing kit, and basically everything you need. I am very, very happy with mine.

The kit is about $575, the Beast sunshell is another $90, figure $300 or so for a good converter (especially if you want lockup, they can be had a little cheaper if not). I rebuilt my trans myself, so labor didn't cost me anything. If I were to build one for a customer I think I would charge about $500 or so in labor. It's an intensive rebuilding/blueprinting operation to get the thing right.

It's been awhile since I was on Pro-Built's website. The Beast sunshell is actually included in the kit. I was thinking about the replacement input drum that he offers as an option for $98. The kit is also under $500. Check out the site and the parts list. It's a hell of a lot for $500, especially with the shift reprogramming kit inlcuded. That's over $100 alone.
