My new Moser 12 bolt and its problems

Ok let me cover all the bases here and state as much info as possible...

-I bought it from Spohn.net.
-Chrome cover and 30 spline axles
-Told them I was going to use my stock 9 bolt rear disks
-It has a 1350 U joint, and 4.11's.

I guess that is all that could be any different from rear to rear.

Here is what it came with

-The 12 bolt housing, tubes and big ford ends all fully welded. (don't understand why big ford ends come with it)

-Two 30 spline axles, with normal metric standard length studs

-Two silver c shaped steal things
-T bolts and 4 toque arm bolts
-Two large bearings that fit on the ends.
-Two spacers
-Two stamped steel, and gasketed seals (I was told these go in the tubes before you slide the axle shafts in.

I took the backing plates off my old rear, put those on the axles and then had the bearings pressed on, then the spacers. I tried sliding these into the housing, remembering to put the ruber seal on first, and pushed as hard as i could.

First of all- These things will not fit in flush with the housing.

Second of all- The baking plates do not line up with the big ford ends, no kidding, but i didn't notice this would happen till it was too late, and everything is pressed. So do I need to dissasemble everything, drill the backing plates and start over???

How do I know what angle the plates need to be at so that the brakes line up?

And how do you fully press these axles in the housing???
Do they go all the way in?
And finally what are the silver c shped things for??

All these little parts can be found in Jegs, with pics of them too.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!! I CALLED MOSER, BUT I CAN NEVER GET THROUGH. ANY INPUT/HELP IS GREATLY APPRECTIATED.

Thanks in advance
-Dennis

I will try again today.

C'mon guys, please help out. There are no machine shops or anything around where I live. If I don't get the info here, things become a lot harder. Even if you have a link to some site that might help that would be great.
Thanks

I would try calling spohn and see what they say, they should be able to give some advice. They come with Big Ford ends because the small GM ones have little tiny bearings and with a rear this caliber you want all good parts. The axles should go right in, I have never had any problems with getting them in. Not to aggervate you more, but this is the reason I won't buy a rear from moser....there customer service and tech sucks...and you can buy a bolt in strange rear for the same price. Good luck, I will be on the lookout for a link with good information for you.

One of the first things you need to do is ident what housing ends you actually have. It could be one of many with ford bearings. Try this site and let us know.

As already stated that I will add to, the aftermarket uses Ford tubes for 2 reasons, one bearings are larger which means stronger/more duable and two they have the axle retention device which GM does not offer. That is what the C clip things are for your wondering about.

I'm surprised the axles did'nt come with the bearings pressed on already, but in any case, they will not slide compeletly into the axle housing-WILL NOT BE FLUSH, I've yet to see one that does, so the bearing/seal combo sticks out just a tad, then the retainer clip goes over top of that and bolts to the end of the axle tubes and that is what holds it all in place and retains the axle should you snap one.

As far as installing your backing plates you would have to do a mock up and fabricate what is necessary to make them work, trying to take 3 different components from 2 manufactuers GM pumpkin, ford tubes, and GM brakes and expect them to bolt together is just not possible unless you paid extra for somebody else to do it for you.

The axle bearings do not sit flush in the housing end. They will stick out a small amount.Your backing plates will need to be counterbored on the side against the bearing so that it slips down over the bearing where it sticks out of the axle tube.I will look for the link that I found the measurements on for ya.

What brake system are you trying to adapt?I used the '89 and up PBR system with my 12 bolt with big ford ends and they bolted right up.All 4 holes matched up 100%.The caliper should sit towards the rear of the car and tilted down..maybe a 30 degree angle or so?I just set them up like they were on the stock rear. And Yes..you will need to remove the backing plates from the axles to get them machined.

The "silver things" are axle retaining plates that I installed after the backing plate. Here is a pic that may help!I also cut a notch in my backing plates so that could remove them whenever needed as opposed to having to get the bearing, spacer, and all associated hardware pressed off to remove them if i ever have to.No problems to date with over 6,000 miles.

...found it...

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ht=counterbore

"counterbore the brake bracket 3.150" to a depth of .110"

the "alternative" method says just make the whole thing 3.150" all the way through, and then you need a 1/8" shim between the brake plate and the retainer plate."

I used the first method myself..and gave those exact words to the machine shop and they came out perfect!HTH

First off let me just say thank you to onebad82z, and the others that have helped. I have just started using thirgen.org, and I didn't expect to get as much help as I did. Thanks again.

I will have the bearings unpressed, and the backing plates sent to the machine shop with the specs that were given in the last post. I also Believe that I will have the plates cut so I can take them off whenever I want.

Does anyone think this sounds bad, having them cut so that they can be taken off? I think it sounds fine, If everything is bolted tight and the car is not a race car or anything.

Anyways, thanks again and I will keep my profile site posted with the updates from all the help I got here.

Like I said I notched mine (backing plates) to the same width as the supplied axle retaining plates ("silver things").I didn't wanna have to press all these parts on and off everytime..if I had to tear it apart that far.I have put over 6k miles on it..with a few drag strip passes slowing down from 105mph.I am pretty hard on the brakes and I have yet to have a problem or see any proof that it was a bad idea for the notch.Just my personal experience..but I wanted to relay other options.Glad I could help..if you have any other questions just post up for us to look at.Alotta good guys here!
