chaTTER IN first gear , help please
No mechanic here can figure this out, can any of you give it your best shot, appreciate any ideas.
I posted a question on the gen. engine the other day, and got some good ideas, but unfortunately, none worked. My problem with my z28 is what seems like a clutch problem. Last year had a new c lutch put in by a local trans shop. After driving it for 6 months, all seemed to work well, UNTIL I drive on the freeway for about 25 miles or more, come back into town, and when I stop at traffic light and start in first gear...it chatters bad. It is a little more difficult shifting also, harder to get in first three gears, but the main p[roblem is chatter. I took the car back and they put a new clutch assdembly in, thought maybe it was bad, well, everything was well till I drove on frreeway, back in town, and first gear....chastter again...so this time I took it back to the mechanic today, he drove it checked everything and could find nothing wrong. He had replaced witrh a new clutch, pilot bearing and had flywhell turned at a good local machine shop. We are stumped.
The only other thing anyone could think of was maybe it had sometyhing to do with rear end, although no problems that I know of..here is one of my questions...how do you tell if it is positive traction, I heard that if it is, it should have a special additive put in the rearedn. I had my rear end oil changed at a local Jiffy Lube last year...if it is pos. trac, and they did not add the add., would itcause the car to shutter going in a straightr line???? GM told me it would only shutter going around a corner if the add. was not there.....but I still have a gut feeling it has something to do with trans, oh they also checked motor mounts, etc., and all appearsa good. The mechanic said he is going to do a slight clutchadjustment tommorrow, bujt does not think it is the problem, also he said the trans seems to be in good shape, no noises, and the oil has been changed also.
If anyone has any ideas of something we may have missed, be email me, thanks much,Dennis

Did your mechanic check to see if there was any oil on the clutch disc when he disassembled everything.
Also, what brand clutch/pressureplate are you using? I have an Auto-bone (Autozone) special in my 91 RS and basically, its CRAP. Started chattering and slipping after proper break in and only 10,000 miles. And I am an EXCELLENT STICK DRIVER. It just may be CRAP PARTS! My buddy runs the Borg Warner BRUTE FORCE (I think thats the name...) clutch assembly and he LOVES IT. I drove it once and punished it. It didnt miss a beat. And his car is a 92 Z28 5.0!
Let me know what you find out...
