please help
sorry, i do not know much about transmissions/clutches, and something is wrong with mine....i have a T-5 in my 91 RS and as i was driving home, i went to shift into 3rd, and it felt like it grinded a little bit (i had my music turned up so i didnt exactly hear what happened) but i knew something was wrong so i turned it down, pushed the clutch back down because i was going to try to go into 3rd again, and as i pushed the pedal down, a really loud screeching noise came out. i rolled to a stop and could not see anything under the car. i started it back up to see if i could get it into gear (i hadnt tried yet because the screeching scared me). it went into gear fine, so i drove it home. i was in a really bad neighborhood and was not far from my house, so i wanted to try it. it made it fine, i used the first through fourth gears without a problem except for the horrible noise any time i pushed the pedal down. any ideas what this could be? dont worry, i will not drive it again and i will take it somewhere most likely, but i thought i would see if you guys had any ideas on what this could be. thank you

Sure sounds like a bad throwout bearing. Have to take out tranny and this bearing is what operates the clutch. Not expensive but lots of work to replace.

agreed. most likely a bad thowout bearing. the part itself shouldnt be more that a few bucks. the problem is getting to it, because the whole transmission has to come out.

thanks for the replies guys. everyone else i talked to also thought of this first. i wont be doing the work myself, i dont even have a garage where i live
i just thought it would be good to be armed with some knowledge when i went in to the shop.
one more quick question, if i find somewhere close that will fix it, would it be smart to drive it there?

Probably won't hurt, the bearing will make noise pretty bad before it locks up. Might also have them replace the pilot bushing in the back of the crankshaft if they put in a whole new clutch kit. Couple dollars more for the bushing.

the only think i would be worried about is if the bearing locks upwhile you have the pedal depressed. if that happens, you could do some damage to the fork that holds it in place. other than that, you cant hurt much as long as you take it easy.

well, i took it in, and drove it there, it wasnt very far
he said that it was indeed the bearing but i probably shouldnt have driven it because it got really hot inside and it did ruin the fork and a couple of other things, cant remember right now but he wrote it all down. (again, i dont know jack about tranny's)
he said the shaft turned blue from being so hot and i was lucky i didnt drive it much farther.
anyway, it came to about $550. i dont know if i got taken or not, but i do know that the pedal goes down easier than it ever has before. so anyway, i guess anybody else who reads this may want to get towed
thanks for the replies
