final rear end decision. tell me if you agree.

I've got a 1988 firebird. came stock w/ an open 3.42 rear end.

what i've decided getting was an:

Auburn Pro Series GM 10-bolt 7.5" 26 spline posi unit
about $440

and....

GM 10-bolt 3.73 Ring and Pinion set w/ a master bearing rebuilt kit
about $230

I think this should work i wanted to know what you guys though
thanks,

drew

Why no 28 spline axle's for about 250$ more . Or is this all you can afford right now . If the rear is not busted now , I would hold out till I could do the hole thing with 28 spline axle's . With the kit you will have the axle bearings . All depends on how much power you plan on haveing .

yea i'm kinda tight on money but you as well as others have recommended the 28 spl axles, so i might hold off till i can afford those too. Though i've never had mine dyno tested, I can beat a Pontiac GTP rated at 265 horses so i guess mine is rated just above that. If that's on the verge of being too much power i'll wait a few till i can get the 28 spl axles.

got any websites where they sell the axles?

look into moser stuff, or strange. I saved up a lot and got a 12 bolt, but I am also planning on a load of power. What kinda power do you plan on shooting for?

i think that's about it for power. i rebuilt the 350 with all new mild-performance parts and a 4-barrel Holley 650 a year and a half ago. the only thing i reused was the block and crank. so as for makin it any stronger, i'm not in the budget cause i'm also workin on a off-road cherokee. for now my main goal on the firebird is to get posi, but i'd like to do it right and not halfass, thus being told i should get some 28 spline axles and toss the 26's.

You could look in to a stock posi unit from a newer f-body 89-92 with a 28 spline axles . Buy new ring & pinoin gears and new axle's . That should hold , I belive the ring gear is the week link in the 7.5 rear. I bought from Randy's Ring & Pinion www.ringpinion.com . I got yokon 28 spline axel's and 373 rinng&pinion gears. They are ouiet and beefy . Finding a good posi doner will be the toughest part , this will save a good amount.
