9 Bolt questions
This guy I work with has got all kinds of IROC parts. He was tellin me about a 9 bolt rear end hes got, disc brake and all. $300, and Im sure its all stock configuration. From what Ive read on here, they're more trouble than they're worth. And its hard to find parts for em. Main thing I want is disc brakes, and something that will handle appx 400-450 HP 383. Think I should go with a 4th gen rear or what? Rebuild my stock 10 bolt (but what about brakes ), or buy that 9 bolt THEN build it? I dont know much about 3rd gen rears, Ive been too concentrated on my motor

a 4th gen 10 bolt will look a lot like what you have, other than the brakes. if you go with a 10 bolt i'd just get a posi carrier and aftermarket axles weld the tubes and run a girddle and not worry so much about disk or go aftermarket/vett later

Get a 12 bolt and be done with it (at least for a long while).
rebuilding the 10bolt to handle a bit of power is going to cost around $1000. and if you are going to slap that high HP motor in your car, you will end up breaking the rear quite often if your tires hook.
Example, my brothers 96 Trans Am LT1 6 speed with bolt ons (dyno'd 288RWHP, 313RWTQ) broke 13 rear ends over 2 years (broke 2 in one day, first his then I loaned him mine and he broke that one as well).
another example is my friends 98 Firebird V6 with 125 shot. He's gone through 2 tranny's and 3 rears. He just rebuilt his for about $1000 in parts (that is where I got the number above).
