mph gauage stoped workin

hi, i have a 92 Z28 305 700r4 and the speedo stoped working last night. i was told it was the mechinical speed sensor or somethin. what it does is it dont even read how fast im going then it jumps up flutters around and falls. then it will jump up stay for a few seconds then fall again. does anyone know how much it would cost to have fixed or how to fix it. thanks dave

Does the "Service Engine Soon" light come on when the speedometer starts acting up? Have you checked for codes yet? If you don't know how to check codes, click on the FAQs on the main page and scroll about 3/4 the way down and it will explain how to.

The sensor your referring to is the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). It's definitely possible that it is going bad, but don't replace it just yet.
