700r-4 to T56
I am considering a conversion from my 700 to a T56. Is there anything sinister that I need to know before I decide to start. If I do make the conversion, I plan on getting the whole car for the trans and motor, so I will have bell housing, shifter, clutch/pedals, etc.
Thanks.
Thanks.

It's an easy swap, but make sure you've got a good amount of wrench time. If this is one of your first projects, seek a little help, there are some parts that can get you in trouble. If you've got any questions shoot them over. I did my swap in a day.

Thanks. I have a couple of friends as well as a dad and brother who can help me with the mechanical stuff, but I may need some help in the technical department. Would you recommend to buy the crossmember or getting one built?

Another question... How can I tell what the gear ratios are in the transmission?

You'll have to either know what car it came out of and use the RPO codes to track them down or there may be a tag on the tranny somewhere and you'll have to cross reference the numbers either through GM, or a website. Most of them out of the f-body's were pretty much the same anyway so it shouldn't be hard to find out. ONly time you run into a problem is if it was out of a 'vette, which is unlikely since the case would be different.

Will a 3.23 rear gear work well with a 2.97 first T56? I would rather have the 3.36 first, but they are hard to find and not as durable under power. The 3.23 rear would work well for top end/gas mileage, but what about off the line? I am still running my stock L03, I was wondering if there would be any differenvce 0-60 between the stock open traction 2.73 rear and 700R-4 and the new posi-trac 3.23 and the T56. Thanks.
I got these numbers when I added up the 1st gear and rear end ratios: 700: 5.79, T56: 6.2. But I don't know if that makes any real world difference.

I had no issues running my 2.97 T56 with a 3.23 rear. I was running my old 2.73 posi right after the swap and that SUCKED.. No off the line power at all and 6th was useless unless you were cruising at 100mph (and then you couldn't go faster without going to 5th).
The 3.23 was night and day better. 3.42's would probably have been optimal, but 3.23's were real comfy
This was on my stock 305 TPI. Now that I'm swapping out to an LS1, I'll pretty much have to run 3.73's to keep the power band up.

Hey, I've been meaning to ask. What are your normal (not over revving, but at full throttle) shiftpoints now with the 3.23 and the T56? Thanks.

Heh, I couldn't tell you! I had the T56 in for a month before I wrecked the car. Then I slapped the new rear in while putting the car back together after paint. I might have put 50 miles on it before getting a deal on a wrecked 2000 z28 I couldn't pass up.
I instantly started stripping the car back down to get ready for the LS1. Here's the T56 now, the day before Katrina. I finally got power back last night, so the swap is back on!

Hey, is that TPI stock or have you modded it? Would you think about selling it?

It's stock hardware wise.. The 305 setup and the T56 is for sale. Prefer to sell the engine as a complete package.
