Lock-up or not? How to test it...........

Ok, finally got the code24 (VSS) to go away. Funny how things get fixed when you replace them..............ANYWAY, here is my dilemma:

Car shifts up through all 4 gears (700R4), quite quickly I may add.
Gets over 50mph in OD and no lock-up.
Trans replaced by GM in 2001. Only has about 8000 miles on it.
Figured the bad VSS might have been holding it back, not.

Questions:

How can I be sure it is a lock-up converter in the first place?
Would the dealer even install a non-lock on this car?
How can I test to see what is what with this situation?

I get on the highway and at 70mph, rpms are at approx 3000 rpm. Now, I have installed a 3:73 and know that will raise it but it never engages lock-up.

Thanks for all your help,

Chris

Do you have any way to data log it to see if the ECM is telling it to lock up?

Reason I ask is the prom controls that on the newer vehicles I believe. Not the shift points with our cars, but they do the lockup. Having swapped put your rear to a 3.73, you might be experiencing somehting along the lines of what I ran into with my 4.11 Ford 9". In my case the shift light comes on in 5th gear and it shouldn't. The circuitry and prom code is similar as I under stand it (on the 90-92 SD setups anyway).

If the ECM is showing to try and be locking up the TCC and it isn't, then obviously there's a mechanical or wiring problem somewhere in that area.

Hope this helps a little bit (and doesn't offend )

i believe i have the same problem as you....i was thinking about just driving it and remembering what the rpms are at a certain speed and then unplugging the plug-in on the trans and driving it again to see if the rpms change at all....but i just dunno if that would be a good test or not.....good luck

drive down the highway and when it SHOULD be locked up, keep your foot steady on the gas and apply the brakes lightly. If the RPM's increase then its unlocked. If the car slows then it's locked.

If you feel four shifts on an 700r4 transmission, then you TC is lockuped. The four shifts are
First to Second
Second to Third
Third to Forth,
TC Lockup.
