Rear End Gearing?!?!

Not that I'm going to change anything, but just want to make sure I don't have a problem.

I have an 88 Iroc Convertible that I purchased used that seems to be running in the higher RPM's than my other Iroc's (I've had an 86, an 87 and a 92). In my previous Camaro's, I would be doing almost 85 when I was reving around 2700 RPM.

My current one I am only doing 70 to 75.

I know these came with different gears from the factory and there are a ton of aftermarket gears as well.

Can some of you with a 305 TPI with Auto (that's what my other camaro's had as well) post what speed you are going at 2500 RPM (in overdrive) and/or what RPM you are spinning at 75 (I would have said 55 but I know no one drives at that speed any more).

Can anyone with better math skills than myself tell me what gears I may be running?

Thanks!

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
First off, what makes you think this car's engine is operating at a higher RPM than the others? Is it just that cute thing in the dash with the little hand that flops around when you give it some gas? If so, ignore it; all that is, is some interior trim the factory put there to make the car "feel" sportier. They were never very accurate even when new, and they break alot in these cars, and their usual way of breaking seems to be, they read higher than the real engine RPM. Which is of course exactly what you suspect is going on.

So, the thing you need to do, is go check that trim against an actual instrument.

Then, if you really want to know what gears you have, the only way you're going to find out for sure, is to look inside the cover. All the codes you can look up and formulas you can figure out, are far less accurate, than counting the teeth. And besides, looks like you just bought that car; the VERY FIRST THING you should ALWAYS do with a used car, is change the fluids. So while you're doing what you're supposed to be doing anyway, make a point of looking at the gears while the cover is off.
