Adapting a transfer case to a 2wd 700R4
I just finished my 355TPI swap into a Bravada but the tranny is shot. I have a trans from a Camaro but for it to bolt to the transfer case you have to remove the tailshaft housing so it can bolt to the transfer case adapter. Once I take the tailshaft housing off, the output shaft will be too long for the transfer case. Do the splines go far enough down that if I trim a couple inches off the shaft it'll still engage the transfer case correctly? My friend did this with a TH350 and it worked fine but I'm not sure about a 700R4.

Hmm ok.
Is it possible that while this trans sat around something gummed up a valve/solenoid? My friend had this trans before me and he said it worked fine when he had it. It's been sitting close to a year.

I have often wondered this also. Is the output shaft different on a 2wd and a 4wd 700r4. My instincts tell me no because it was a mass produced transmission found in various vehicles. Is there possibly an exta "extension" housing between the end of the 700r4 case and where the transfer case bolts up to the transmission. Not so much a tapered tail shaft housing but something that continues the shape of the transmission case so that the transfer case can bolt up. This would produce the results that you are looking for without having to trim the shaft down. I dont know if that makes sense just something to think about.

there is a big difference between a 2wd 700r4 output shaft and a 4x4 output shaft on a 700r4. you also cannot cut the splines down on a 700r4 because you will not have enough splines left to engage the transfer case. the 700r4 definitely has to have the shaft changed. the transfer case adapter is shorter than a 2wd tailhousing also.
