no hope for my rear?
i had a guy take a gander at my rear end recently, because it makes a loud humming sound whenever i hit the brakes. he told me that the sound is the axle bearings, because they are very old.
he also told me that the rear cannot be worked on because the clips, or 'pins' as he said that hold the axle together, were ruined, and had broken off on the outside of the rear? he said he tried to drill out the pin, but he couldnt do it. he said the only way for the rear to come apart is for that pin to come out, if i cant get it out, the rear is hopeless to ever be rebuilt, unless i cut off the axles. does this makes sense to anyone? i thought c-clips were on the outside of the rear, not INSIDE of it. it sounded weird to me, please someone explain this to me.

Ten-bolt? The C-clips are inside the housing. A single bolt holds the cross pin in place (without removing these two pieces, the C-clips, and consequently, the axels can't be removed). This small bolt is famous for rounding or breaking. I'd think any reliable mechanic complete the job.

With the C-clips in place the axels can't be come out--unless a catastrophic failure of some sort occurred--so in that regard all should be well. Before you swap, you might take a look yourself. Check these links and do a bit of research:
