Changing rear gear- need help
The car--'92 Camaro RS 305 TBI.
I'm not sure what gear I have, I think it's around 3.20 ish?
I would jack up the car and rotate the wheels and look at the driveshaft to get a good guess, but my car is so low it's a pain in the a$$ to do that.
So dose anyone know what gear I have?
I want to get a 4.10, what do you guys think about that?
Will it be to hard on the motor while on the interstate?
If so I have no problem getting the 3.73

First, the only way to tell what gear you have is to open the cover and count the teeth.
I almost got a 4:10 gearset, but opted for the 3:73 instead and I am very glad I did. I went from a 2:73 to the 3:73 and the difference was night and day. In fact for the stock motor, which peaked at 4500rpm, 3:73 was in my opinion, too much gear. a 3:23 would have done it. But I had other plans and the stock 4500rpm's were not part of it.

Thanks for the reply!
I plan on keeping the stock 305 in the car untill it dies.
I really like the 'quick' 4.10 when used with a built trans w/shift kit, which I have, do you think the 3.73 would be better with the stock 305?
Thanks....

From the factory it should have came with 3.08 on the manual and 2.73 for the auto. You could check the RPO codes to see if it was ordered with different gears. But in the end the only way to know 100% is to pull the cover and count teeth.

I would go with a 3:42 or a 3:73 if you plan on leaving the 305 stock. 3:73 is nice. Headers and an American Thunder Exhaust system would wake it up with 3:73's.
EDIT: The rpo codes are on the bottom of the lid for your center consol. Look the codes up on this site.

Theirs usually a sticker under the lid of the console which will have a whole sh!tload of 3 letter/number combos. Those are the RPO codes. Basically all the options that were put on the car, from paint and trim color to interior detailing.
If you still have the sticker there look for these:

Those were GMs rear axle ratio RPO codes, if you can find any of those let me know, i can tell you which gears were originally in the car.

Considering that and my rpm's reading 2 g's at 70 mph I think i'll go with the 3.73 gear.
Thanks again fellas

DON'T MESS AROUND GUESSING WHAT RATIO YOUR REAR IS BY ASSUMING THAT IT IS STILL STOCK. I DID THIS AND FOUND THAT MY 3:42S HAD BEEN REPLACED BY 3:08S BY SOME PREVIOUS OWNER. MY CAR SAT ON A HOIST FOR A WEEK. WHILE I PAID OVERNIGHT SHIPPING TO GET MY GEAR SET BACK TO THE SUPPLIER, AND PAID OVERNIGHT CHARGES TO GET THE CORRECT GEAR SET TO ME. THE WHOLE TIME MY BOSS IS SCREAMING BECAUSE HE IS LOSING MONEY CAUSE WE CAN'T USE THE HOIST. PULL THE COVER AND COUNT TEETH, ITS WORTH IT.
