Rear carrier questions
My rear end is on its way out. The pinion shaft moves up and down in the carrier and the bearings and pinion seal are shot. I'm looking at parts on ebay and found a carrier with 26 spline spider gears. Will my stock 28 spline spider gears work with this carrier or would I have no choice but to find 26 spline camaro axles? I've also considered swapping a 4th gen rear in its place and getting different rear rims?

I'd do all new bearings and races or look at them closely. Your pinion nut may have backed off. They need to be steaked tho many never heard of it or practice it. No matter what you need new gears if it's got that much play That's after replacing the bearings and races.
You already have 28 spline axles. Why not put in a 28 spline posi and gears from a 4th gen or late 3rd gen or buy new ones. They are all the same and fit like a glove. Would be easier on your wallet. Check out the for sale fourm here or some of the other fbody fourms. If you have to then post in the wanted fourm. Way cheaper than ebay.

They won't work.
Stick with the 28 spline rear.
My 87 TA had a 26 spline rear and I upgraded to a 28 spline carrier and Moser 28 spline axles.

why not buy a dirt cheap parts car for the axle or buy one out of a yard ?
can get these axles dirt cheap,
even an unwanted or wrecked or rusted whole car for next to nothin,
i mean,.,
save yourself all that crazy trouble of disassembling and reassembling axles,
aint worth it, really, imho
start leaving notes on houses and whatever where you see a third gen sitting not being driven- or missing plates- rusted- wrecked- whatever
you would be really surprised what you can get given to you for free or basically free!
for real.
good luck

I gave away an 83 Berlinetta to a guy doing the same thing. A guy drove up the the house and asked what I was doing with it. I was going to be moving in a week and wanted it gone. I told him if he could get it out of the drive by that Friday, he could have it. He came and got it that afternoon. I was happy and so was he.

Car stuff even from a junk yard in my area isn't cheap. I paid 100 for my replacement axles. Whether or not I got ripped off is beyond me but I needed the axles so I bought them.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
The pinion isn't mounted in the carrier. It is not possible for it to have slop in the carrier.
The pinion is mounted in the housing.
No you cannot use 28-spline side gears in a 26-spline carrier. They will fit right in, and all will appear happy, until you try to put the axles in. At that point, you will discover that the hole in the early-model carrier, is too small for the late-model axles to fit through.
If your car is a 91 and has the 91 rear in it, it's 28-spline anyway, so don't worry about 26-spline anything.
Don't buy any parts until you know for sure what you have, and what's really wrong with it.
The pinion nut is notorious for backing out in this model of rear end. Try tightening the pinion nut and see what happens. Tighten it only until all the slop you observe is taken up, and then about 1/16 turn more. See if it doesn't behave a bit better.

Axle/Gears: 4th gen rear
Well I decided to chuck the old rear and went out and found a 4th gen rear and put it in the other day. The disc brakes are awseome and the slop was mostly takin out. All I have to do now is replace the u joints in the driveshaft and I'm set.
I'll take pics of my old rear and what I mean by the play in the shaft that goes through the carrier.
