4.10's & headers, for time being
Okay, no one makes 3rd gen axles anymore. Mine are shot and I am very hesitant to buy used axles and have them go bad on me.
My friend has a 4th gen axle with 4.10's that he would sell to me for $150. Would those and headers be fine for the time being? Time being is until I get the LT1 intake or First intake on there (( probably not w/i the next 6-months to a year)). Here are some issues that I'm worried about:
1) I hear that 4.10's are un-streetable, how? Too much spinning, horrible gas mileage?
2) 4.10's are horrible for TPI, I understand that, but he is so adamant about the tranny shifting anyway and it will just go through the powerband quicker.
3) Track racing, I can't go into 4th at WOT. When will I be shifting with 4.10's and can that be fixxed.....i.e. vetter servo or something like that?
4) Will ported TPI and LT headers help me out enough to run 4.10's or not enough?
This is my daily driver and I am sick of dealing with rear end issues, I can deal with crappy MPG for the time being. But FOR THE TIME BEING, can I deal with 4.10's?
Help me out guys!!

You must not have looked very hard for axles.
I'm guessing this is for the car in your sig. That would have a 10-bolt with 28 spline axles.
Look up SAGEV104 in Summit. That's what you need.
4.10s are WAY WAY WAY too much for a TPI motor, even with headers. That goes at least DOUBLE for a car with auto trans. You'll find that 1st gear will be altogether useless. As far as spinning, well I guess that all depends on what tires you put on it.
To let the car shift into OD at WOT, you need some particular valve that came in Caprice and other police cars. It's real cheap, costs like $35. Do a search on this forum for "upshift valve" and things like that, you'll eventually find it. Or, go look at www.bulkpart.com and you'll find all sorts of goodies for your trans.

I'm looking for stock replacement, not high performance. That's why I can't find them at any Auto Recyclers or anything. That one your referring to is gonna be over $300 shipped. I can get a complete rear end for that. That's why I asked if a 4th gen rear with 4.10's ($150) would be worth it and the answer is no.

If you had an open diff now and the 4th gen is a posi i would grab it.
Swap the gears out later on down the road. but untill that time you will get some fairly crappy gas mileage and you will rev way to high for the TPI setup to make good power.
As for spinning, good luck keeping the tires!
On one of my cars i have 4.10s with a th-350c trans and it lights up the tires like nothing, the 700r4 has an even steeper first gear which will make it even worse.

Why not just go to the junk yard and start pulling axles till you find two good ones? If you find two good ones its not like they are gonna go bad any time soon.
