T5 whine

Performed the T5 (NWC) swap over break and it whines . It whines in every gear but 4th. The whine gets a little louder the faster or harder you accelerate. There is also no noise with the clutch pressed. Also with the t5 in neutral with the clutch released, it makes a slight noise but its not a whine. Kinda like a chain on a bike but very quiet. It shifts into all the gears with no problems and stays in gear. Runs great except for the noise.

So what do you all think it is? I've heard things from it being just a bearing to the gears having a wear pattern on them. And what parts will I need. I'm going to try to rebuild it myself. I've noticed that there are two different kits though. One light kit with bearings and seals, and another that includes the synchro rings. Which would you all recommend?

it is def. your brearings. it may also be a combination of worn gears. if there is more than 60k on the trany then i would recommend the full rebuild kit which also includes the syncros. you will need a press, if you do not have one, or do not have easy access to one then do NOT do this rebuild! otherwise in one weekend you could have it apart and diagnosed and put back together. I was able to rebuild my trany in one weekend, but i also had access to a press and huge part cleaner (makes the case look brand new). i got my kit from hanlonmotorsports.com they are cheap and easy to talk with if u have a question. they also have a video u can buy if u cant follow diagram well.

good luck!

thanks for replying, that is some good news. My neighbor has a press so that isn't a problem. I downloaded the rebuild guide that tremec offers and it appears to be straight forward. I'm just hoping its not the gears due to the cost to replace them.

most likely it is just the bearings but, that other noise can very well be the output shaft where the input shaft needle bearings ride (if so don't get too upset I have been told the v6 trans uses the same one) good luck on the build and set each and every part in the order and direction you removed it. it is a real easy job

Re: T5 whine

My transmission has a whine also. I was wondering if I could run a thicker lube, like 75w gear lube, to eliminate or prolong the destruction. Anyone have an idea?

I want to prolong as long as possible till I can afford to get a better setup. I am exceeding the limitations of a WC T-5
