sbc 400's and clutch choices??

i am being informed that i need a 11" clutch for my flywheel on my 406 being built. and the stock bellhousing will not clear it. i know i will be using a lakewood bellhousing but any ideas on exactly which clutch or combination to use? any help would be nice. thanks, dave. And by the way i am using a tremec 3550 with 26 spline input shaft.

I am running a McLeod 10.5" Street/Strip clutch on my 383/TKO 600 setup. This is at Mcleod's reccomendation. Take a look at their website www.mcleodind.com

that would be nice, but the flywheels for a 400 are larger than 350's. or am i wrong?

Well, you're right in the sense that when 400's were around, there were no thirdgen's with 10.5" flywheels. So all the flywheels available for a 400 were 11".....

An 83-86 T-5 (2 pc) flywheel will bolt right up to your 400. BUT - All STOCK 400's were externally balanced from the factory unless it's been rebuilt with aftermarket crank rods etc. and balanced INTERNALLY at a machine shop. If it's internally balanced, just bolt on the flywheel and go.

If not, you'll need to either get the flywheel "unbalanced" so to speak, at a machine shop to 400 specs or run some type of offset weight. I know Summit sells the weights for auto cars (bolts to flexplate) but I'm not sure about manuals....Oh, and you'll need a 400 balancer too.

well i talked to my father-in-law, and actually the flywheel is a billet steel piece, not actually a stock one. And yes it is externally balanced. he said he'll have to measure buy it looks like i/we need a 11" pressure plate. i believe centerforce makes one with the right spline count on the disk. hopefully.
