rear end help
rear end help
I purchased a rebuild kit from summit, and the spider gears as well...... Purchased the ring and pinion gear from jegs most of it is Richmond. Here what I have done so far we swapped out the old gear for a new one, had the bearings pressed off and replaced. Pressed on a new bearing to the pinion, and installed new races......... Found that the spider gear were shot......
Everything lined up proper wear pattern was good. Shimmed up nicely...... When we installed the pinion gear is when we ran into problems. Had everything in position put on the seal, crush sleeve, yoke and washed and new nut. Turned a couple threads........ this is the problem either my gun is not strong enough to push the yoke back in and crush the sleeve or something is binding. Not sure, can't get the yoke to move in........... Any one have any suggestions its possible my ir impact gun is week and I only have a 12 gallon compressor..... My snap on gun is way stronger and can get a 33 gallon craftsman on loan.......... My question to all of you would be am I suppose to crush the sh*t out of it or am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated
Thanx
Kenny
p.s. Its a 1988 formula with TBI 5.0, 700r4 trans and 10 bolt 2.73 rear

you don't or shouldn't use an impact on the pinion nut, and if you do an impact doesn't have enough *** to do the job anyway. i'd trash the crush sleeve and get a solid spacer. on the little 10 bolts i have a hard time not going too far o mnthe preload. i usually buy 3 or 4 of the crush sleeves when i used them because it was so easy to go too far on the preload.

You can use an impact gun, but you have to be very careful. I've been doing it on rears for a couple of years now with good results. It takes about 350 lbs/ft to start the crush on the sleeve. I start cranking on it and checking the endplay on the assembly. When it gets down to near zero endplay I start going in 1/4 turn increments (I put a mark on the socket so I can tell how far it's spinning). Every 1/4 turn I check the preload.
ede is still right though, a solid spacer is a much better way to go. Those 7.5s can use all the help they can get. The crush sleeve is a common source of problems on other rears too. Early in Ford's racing program it was identified that the crush sleeve was responsible for pinion failures. Their solution was to issue a heavy duty service kit that was basically a solid spacer and some shims!

figured out my problem
It was that i was suppose to put the sleeve on the pinion gear before installing the pinion gear. And then put the pinion throught the housing with the race and seal on the other end.
Works better when one has lots of sleep and read the directions properly.
