Engine: 305 TPI
Transmission: T56 6 speed
Axle/Gears: 3.27 borg warner 9 bolt
flywheel ring gear?

what exactly is a ring gear on a flywheel and what does it do?

Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Go get yourself a flywheel and look at it.

See that big ring that goes all the way around it, with all those gear-looking teeth?

That's the ring gear.

The starter uses it to spin the engine. Without it, the starter cannot start anything.
