The 4L60E, is basically a 700R4, that is electronic. It will bolt up to a 305, and you would need a PCM to properly control the transmission.

pcm?

when swappin a 700R4 for the 4L60E the pcm where would that hook up? what would it do to my already computer in it, its carb. its still got the stock manifold, the stock carb, and distributer. ive been told by a few people that it would be a possible bad thing to do, so i have no idea. i know that i want to do that, cause those trannys are one hell of a tranny and will take a beating, and possibly increase some top speed. but yet my rpm red line is at 5000, its not a high out put, so would it shift higher or would i have to get one of them jet computer programmers?? basicly my main question is what would it affect if i do that.. i know performance will increase so please dont say that.

Interesting setup. Could you connect just the vital sensors such as VSS & Tach to the PCM and still have it operate correctly? I know it would probably be freaking out because it would look like the engine was not running, but could it work...using a PCM just as a tranny controller?...

I don't have any schematics for the newer PCMs running the 4L60E / 4L80E.

Hi,
Yes its possible,
If you have the computer control Carb, "CCC" then its posible. You will need to feed both TPS and Tech signals from you current ECM into the Tranmission Controller. Dependent on year of 4L60e, it will bolt right up to your 305. Back in December I completed this swap into my 1982 Firebird.

I used the aftermarket transmission controller from TCI. You will also loose you cable drive for the speedometer and curise control. You will have to get the CableX thing to drive the speedometer. The TCI controller requires the high frequency VSS signal from the 40 pulse /rev. reluctor. As for shift points, etc, its all programable by the user.

Please see this post.
4L60e install

I knew it could be done, but I have never tried it. Bruce, has all the bases covered from the threads he posted. Pretty interesting, Bruce.

but

bruce yours was for a 200R4, i know there are slight differances between the two trannys, i have a 700R4 and my housing is across the middle of it, i had to replace a tranny mount. (crossmember) so im not sure if some of those specs that you gave me are going to be completely accurate, but i do know for a fact that most the others will be a great deal of help thank you very much maybe soon i will have a post with some pictures of it, but i gotta tell ya the body is ****.. i gotta get new panels all around because of the previous owner, decieded he would let it sit for 6 years in a harsh des moines weather.

No mine old tranny was the orginal 200c, three speed. If you get the an 4L60e from 94-97 Forth-Gen then you would use the same cross member that you already have. If you get the Perforance Parts 4L60e like I did, then you have to change and use the same Spohn cross-member that I used.

Please note, for the 4L60e case, tail-housing combinations there are three drifferent versions to hook up the verious V8s. Please reread my post, there are some notes about the case styles.

Good Luck!

200c and 200r4 are not the same transmission. I know there was one guy who posted to the thread, talking about the 200r4. But the guy was confused. 200r4 was only used on the Turbo TA, which used the same engine and transmission from the Grand National.

Your conversion to 4l60e will be a lot easy then mine. Like I said above, reread the post. Disregard anything that is said about the 200r4.
