weird ticking noise when clutch engaged

Need some help here. I just replaced my old starter after the solenoid went out. when I installed the new one it started right up but when i depress the clutch a strange clicking noise is now being made in the vicinity of the starter. It gets louder and and faster the more you push in the clutch. I then put the old starter back in and it is now also making the same noise. I have now put the new one back in and driven it around and no change. Does anyone know what is causing this ticking sound. I am guessing it may be an allignment issue with the starter but the old one didnt have any shims on it and the new one didnt come with any. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Clicking noise

I have heard that noise before and it turned out to be a throwout bearing. I changed it and the noise disapeared.
