Do i need a stall converter with this motor?

It is a 350 bored .060 over, .500 lift cam, 441 chevy heads, and a dual plane with a carb. if i do need one what would be the best. oh yeah its a 700r4.

another thing i know im going to have to get a converter lock up. how exactly does all of that work? i never knew.

700's use lock up torque converters. Unless they are modified properly to accept a non lock up converter. A converter should always be "stalled" to suit your combo for best performance.

as brutaform said, give us the duration of the cam and you'll get better suggestions.

Be sure to address the tv cable, linkage and mounting bracket. If the tv geometry is wrong, you will kill the trans dead! And it will happen quite quickly too.

for that cam, a 26-2800 stall is enough... and if you don't yet have it, a set of 3.42 or 3.73 gears will add some fuel to the fire.

a 2600 stall is NOT HIGH at all...if you get a very efficient one from a trusted manufacturer you wont know the difference between theirs and the stock one until you mash the gas...VERY streetable, nothing to worry about if you get a "good" one.

Converters range from $100-$900 depening on size, options and quality. Warrantees also vary.

I agree with leeperryracing. A stall of 2600, is just getting you into the range you want to be in, as far as stall goes. Might even need more.

typically higher rear end gears and higer @50 durations
determine what stall you need

or i should say higher stall you go with will want numerically higher grear ratio

remember most stall ratings are approximate

The way the Edge 9.5-inch 2600 stall converter works in my stock '92 5.7 is that when the go-pedal is mashed, the rpm is moved up to around 3k where the engine makes some real power, instead of down lower in the gutless range. The car doesn't creep at idle, takes a bit more pedal to get it moving, but actually has less rpm than the stock converter when locked up.

What I would do is, call a few converter companies, (Edge, Precision Ind, etc), talk to one of their reps, and, you'll have a good idea what you will need. They will be happy to help you out. Andre, at Edge is a real good guy, and very informative.
