A4 to T5 Swap Questions
Posted first on CamaroZ28.com
I just 'completed' an A4 to T5 swap. This is the first time I have done any work to a transmission, so bear with me. I have a few questions.
1. When the transmission is engaged, there is a whirrring type of sound. Is this normal?
2. The clutch doesn't engage the transmission to the flywheel until the very top of the petaltravel. Is this normal? It is a brand new Chevy hydraulic setup.
3. The transmission was very hard to install to the bellhousing, could I have warped, dinged, bent something vital. It does have a new throwout bearing but an old, used clutch disk.
4. The transmission slips when put into any gear. I know this isn't normal.
Any one have any ideas on how to properly make this thing run properly?
Thanks.

#3 sounds like your clutch needs adjusting, possibly the linkage is all wrong.
#4 if your pedal doesnt engage the clutch till all the way out, its most likely not even all the way engaged. thus thats why its slipping. if you keep driving it like this your gonna need a new clutch. soon.
as far as slipping, might also have some worn synchro blocker rings, i duno how much "slipping" you would feel with those being worn though. im just sayin, thats the only onther "slippable" part in the trans...
as far as the whirring noise. you said the trans went in funny and not straight on? you might have ****ed up the pilot bearing in the back of the crank. i dunno what kind of bearings are used but if they are just a bunch of needles....
someone correct me if any o my info is wrong. its all based off memory.. lol.

Hydraulic clutch set up, no adjustment available.
Pilot bearing is a brass bushing, I think hat I did mess that up though.
Fortuneately this is not the DD. I do want to get it running properly ASAP.
Thanks

Sounds like either 1) the clutch wasn't torqued down enough, or 2) it's bad and not holding.
Also, never use a brass pilot bearing. always use a timken roller bearing.

Clutch not torqued down enough is a distinct possiblity.
I installed the throw out bearing improperly, IAW the directions enclosed in the new SACHS clutch kit.
I will have to find the timken roller bearing.
Thanks

you said you had a worn clutch disk, thats the reason for the petal going so high before grabbing. I also had a whirring sound after the same swap, all my trans needed was more fluid, the noise is worst in 5th gear. as for the tight fitment I would suggest taking the trans off the bellhousing and realigning the clutch with the tool---if you dont have one its the best 2 bucks you will ever spend. if the trans is tight the collar of the input shaft could have caught the throwout bearing or fork wrong. I would again strongly suggest taking the trans off and checking alignment, that trans should butt right up to the bellhousing if everything is perfect before you even put the bolts in, if not its tight as ****.

What? The second he stepped on the clutch, with the tranny all the way in it is now aligned. THe alignment tool is to help center the disc when inserting the tranny. Infact, an easier method, is to push the tranny into the splines, then have a friend step on the clutch and push the tranny into the pilot bearing.. (or use a pry-bar if you can hold the tranny with one hand).
Either way, it's gotta come back out so he can figure out why it slips. Maybe the disc is worn, maybe he didn't torque the plate down all the way. I've seen both happen. At least he didnt make the throwout bearing mistake a lot of new guys do..
