You will not know till you open it up. I broke a rear planetary, reaction shaft and an output shaft when the same thing happened to me.

I lost the 700r4 in my 82 Blazer (same symptoms, different circumstances). Just going down the road about 20 mph and heard/felt a noise like I'd run over something in the road. Didn't realize there was anything wrong until I started trying to climb the next hill. I'd coasted several hundred yards between the noise and putting my foot back on the gas pedal. The engine would rev up but I had no power transfer to the rear is any gear selection. The repair shop gave me a box of fragmented pieces back. The planetary gear set only had one complete gear left in the main ring and the whole center of that was busted loose from the outside ring. It just self destructed with almost no load on it. I was on level ground and was coasting along getting ready to brake before going through a 90 degree sharply downhill curve. It happens.

Would this leave metal in the pan? I took the pan off and it is clean the fluid it super clean. I didn't mention above that i serviced this transmission about 2 weeks ago. New filter gasket and about 5 qts b&m trick shift fluid. The filter didn't fall off it was still up in there. When i checked the fluid it was about 2 qts over full and this changed very little with the engine running and warm. THANKS for all the replies.

Is this in all ranges?

Have you tried OD, D, second, and first? And reverse?

In OD and D it uses the clutches to engage, and in second and first it uses the band. However that wouldn't explain no reverse.

Low fluid pressure can cause it, (like if your front pump disintegrated), you could check by pulling the radiator tranny cooler line and just starting the car. You'll instantly know if you have pressure LOL. Theres a tap you can put a pressure gauge on if you don't want to deal with the tranny fluid everywhere.

Could the flex plate to torque convertor bolts have sheared or fallen out? Or maybe your tranny slipped back and somehow pulled the converter off the tranny?

I'm just brainstorming here, stuff externally you could check. Best bet is to just open it up and see...

I'm talking about the transmission filter the only thing that holds it in is like a rubber ring thing inside the transmission pan i don't know what the name for it is i have seen them fall out before but thats not what happened here thanks for your reply

My buddies have broke input and output shafts on theres just driving down the road. But is was prolly from them playing with it and getting on it before that time and it just finally gave out. Kinda did the same kinda thing.

I would replace the entire pump assembly and the torque converter. The convertor might not be damaged, but if you got some crap in the vanes, you will find out the hard way. I wouldn't bother just replacing the vanes and pump, for the extra money you can have a new unit that won't have any scratches or gouges. You can get pretty good deals at www.technicalvideos.com. I have ordered several parts through them and they have always had the time to discuss my options.

You say park works (vehicle cannot be moved in either direction, and the driveshaft does not spin when you put it in gear?), then it is most likely that the input shaft, or the input drum broke.
