POSI question

I have access to a couple of rear ends, one is an open 3.42 with 26 spline axles, the other is a posi 2.73 with 28 spline axles. I wanted to know if it was possible to take the 28 spline axles out of the one rear, get a new 3 series/28 spline POSI and put the 3 series POSI , 28 spline axles and the 3.42 gears all in the 3.42 rear end housing which originally was open with 26 spline axles?

I dont believe its possible to put 28 spline guts in a 26 spline housing. Something about the axle length rings a bell but i cant remember for sure.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Yes. Not a problem.

There is no length issue with the axles, as long as they're 3rd gen.

Another Q...

Why not swap the complete rear end instead of wrestling with swapping parts over and aligning the carrier?

because i can get the POSI unit for really cheap, but its for 28 spline axles and my rear that has 28 splines in it already has crappy 2.73 gears in it.
