"aftermarket" T56 vs. 4th gen comparison?

Eventually I'll put a T56 into the IROC. Right now I have a T5.

My 2 choices are to do the usual 4th gen swap, or to buy the aftermarket Tremec unit which will use most of my existing hardware. Do any of the guys here that went that route have any comments about that choice?

It seems appealing to me because I can keep my stock mechanical speedometer, along with all the T5 hardware including the flywheel and clutch.

By the time I spend the money for the mechanical speedo "upgrade" on a 4th gen T56, buy a flywheel and buy a new clutch, it seems like my expenses will be higher than just buying the new aftermarket T56.

Comments? Anybody else weigh these same issues? What was your decision?

i was going to swap out my t-5 for a t56. I was told that by the time you buy all the things you need for the lt1 t-56 to work, you're up to the price of the aftermarket. On the aftermarket one the crossmember work, the clutch works, just need to shorten the driveshaft and possibly the torque arm. I would go aftermarket.

The LS1 4thgen trans, '98 and up will use all your hardware in clutch forms with the 8-207 bellhousing from mcleod, and the 8617 pilot bearing.

Not sure about the crossmember stuff yet. Everything is ready to slide the trans in today in my swap. Time to go he-man.
