T56 : NEED CLUTCH ADVICE !
Hey , I am looking for some advice on clutch set for an LT1 T56 . I am still trying to stay on a budget with my 92 RS project. You guys have been very helpful answering my questions with this build up and I really want to say thank you ! I have a used clutch set with an aluminum press. plate that I can have the clutch disc re-lined with Kevlar by a local shop for $ 70 but he cannot beef up the press. plate. I have a pretty stout 327 no NOS or anything but pretty stout do you think this will be sufficiant ? What would you recommend ? I have been looking at a new
Spec Set. Did GM make a factory aluminum press. plate ?

Almost every clutch out there comes as a kit - pressure plate, clutch disc, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and a clutch install tool. Also, good luck staying cheap. Clutches typically run upwards of $400 for the t-56.
I’m not sure what you mean by saying that you can have a local shop re-line the clutch disc. Are you talking about an OEM style clutch or a clutch with pucks? Either way, I’m not sure that I would trust someone to drill/grind out the rivets holding the friction material to the disk and then attach new stuff.
Aluminum: not many people make aluminum pressure plates but aluminum flywheels are pretty easy to come by. This will save you more weight in the end and the aluminum won’t have an impact on the car because it will still weigh as much as a T-5 clutch. Most aluminum plates come with a replaceable steel disc that the clutch will engage to.
Why not just save the time/effort and buy a nice clutch?

I think if I was in your situation I wouldn't mess with it and get a nice new matched set pressure plate/clutch disk/etc. etc. Depending on how you installed it may be less expensive than you think. IE if you retained stock t5 bellhousing and used an adapter plate to mate the T56.

Yeah , the clutch I have I got with the T 56 set up . I think it is an OE set but I didn't know about the pressure plate since it is aluminum. There is a shop here in town called Tri Cities Clutch and Brake which specializes in re-lining brakes and clutch disc. He said he could re-line it with kevlar. You guys are probably right I should just break down and buy a new set. Would you recommend a SPEC brand set or a different kind ? I was wondering if anyone has used an aluminum Fidanza flywheel I just purchased one for $350 2 pc rear main style.

yes the kevlar disks do work better. i worked for a driveshaft and relining shop, i would not have any issues with going that route.
