Tranny leak!

I got my car out of winter storage a few days ago and it left a big puddle of tranny fluid under the car. Took about two quarts to fill it back up. It was coming from the front of the tranny but I couldn't tell if its the seal, pan gasket, or something else. It seems to only leak when it sits for long periods of time. I noticed before I put it in storage there was no fluid on my garage floor but if it set for a week or so it would leave a few drops. Its a 86 trans am with a 700r4. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Sometimes gravity forces the fluid that is above the centerline of the torque converter to drain and syphon out. This happens when they sit for a while. A new pump seal will likely fix it. Start it once a week when it sits and it may not do it.

Take a look at the dipstick tube seal too.

Take your dust cover off to inspect it.If theres a pool of tranny fluid in there your front main seal might have had enough

I would go with the front shaft seal. Just had mine replaced due to a leak. Take the dust shield off and check the seal area for the leak. A major job to replace.

I have experienced that problem. It is coming through the gasket. I take my car out for a drive every two to three weeks and it is kept indoors. After a day or so a few drops of tranny fluid appears on the floor. I replaced the pan gasket and after about two weeks it came out through that. I replaced the pan gasket two more times using different gasket manufacturers and it came through that. I then decided to leave out the gasket altogether and just use loads of gasket seal. It held it well for three weeks after which time a few drops began to apear near the dust cover. I can see where it is coming out in one spot. It is not from the front seal, it is definitely coming out through the gasket seal. It is making me very anger. If a car is used everyday then this doesn't happen. It's only when left for a while that the fluid makes it's way through the gasket. I think it's cause it's so light.

If I were you I would replace the pan gasket and it will be fine once you are using the car regularly. It shouldn't leak until it's lelf up again for the winter.
