700R4 checkball ?

On the 88 and up 700R4s, do you need a checkball in this location? What is the purpose of it?

Gm thought it would soften reverse, but it did not. Sometimes it would get stuck in the capsule & burn the low/reverse clutches. I remove the checkball & leave the capsule in all of my 700R4 & 4L60E units.

This would explain why the last couple I did had no check ball. I assumed the ball wore through the retaining tabs and the previous builder forgot to replace it.
Great tip
