So a little while back, the factory t-5 in my 87 Iroc dropped 5th, and then a few days later 1st and 2nd went out. Now I finally have the time to work on it (its not my daily driver.) I don't have the money to buy a t-56 or a TKO, besides those still require some modifications. I don't have many mods, so I know a t-5 would suffice. The only problems I'm running into are 1. I can't find any kind of rebuild kit (I see them for the WC t-5's, and kits for mustangs) and 2. the trans has 180,000 miles on it. I can't even decide if that one is worth rebuilding. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to spend the least amount of money possible without buying a used t-5 off ebay or from a junk yard.

 

I saw an ebay seller that had non-wc t5 rebuild kits for about $75. There were several people on there that have the non-wc kits for sale. Even if you decided to buy a whole trans, the non world class ones usually sell pretty cheap compared to the newer wc units.

 

Do yourself a HUGE favor on convert to a TH-350. If you rebuild the t-5, you'll continue to have problems. It will cost you $2000 to replace the t-5 with a reasonable manual trans. You can get a well-built 305 for less than half that that will last forever, and they're cheap to fix. It took a while to convince me, but I'm tired of f****ing around with a trans that is very weak and KEEPS screwing up.
