Poweglide modifications
I did a search but couldn't find any what I was looking for. This will be going into a 2800lb RX7 with a 406. What are the best mods for the tranny to live and handle the power. I have a PG from a 67 camaro with a 327 as a core. Thanks, Steve

It doesn't need much. Even in stock trim, it can take a lot of abuse.
Change the input shaft to any of the aftermarket shafts with turbo splines, Vasco, M300 etc. The PG has course splines and needs a specific torque converter. If you use a turbo spline input shaft, you can use any torque converter designed for TH350/TH400.
Change the clutch center hub from the factory cast hub to a steel one. Aluminum is also available but it wears out faster.
Change the servo piston to a dual seal piston.
That's about it. You can do other upgrades like using a kevlar band or getting a direct hub that can take more frictions.
Changing the shift linkage rod to an updated one to use any of the aftermarket shifters is good to.

Thanks, after doing a search I was hoping you'd respond. Seems like some guys spend 2G's on these and others have great luck with less than a couple hundred.

You can buy an SFI case, Ultrabell, 1.80 straight cut gear plus many other items to make it a few thousand dollar transmission capable of taking 2000 hp but for most of us, something that can take less than 1000 hp is more than enough. My only recommendation is to stay away from the I6 powerglides that have the 1.82 first gear. The gear set is weak and can easily break. The V8 version will have the 1.76 first gear. I have a spare, still completely stock PG, under a bench in my garage if I ever need it.
There's enough aftermarket parts that you can build an entire powerglide and not have a single factory part in it.
