differential difference
what is the difference from the ten and nine bolt rearends, i just bought a 3.23 10 bolt posi from someone and now i have a chance at a 9 bolt from an 86 t/a, i'm wondering if it's worth trying to pick up or not and what the difference is between the two??
9 bolt rear ends are kind of the odd ball rear ends put in these cars, they are stronger than a stock 10 bolt, but its damn near impossible to find different gear ratios for them. I would personally steer clear of the 9 bolt. Even though 10 bolts are not exactly known for their durability.
9 bolt
Has a 7.75" ring gear diameter. Also comes in different sized gear ratios like 2.77, 3.27, 3.45, and such. Very hard to find parts for. Very expensive to fix, since there are no parts for them anymore.
10 bolt
7.5", or 7.625" ring gear diameter. A little weaker, yet easier to find parts for, and cheaper to fix. Has gear ratios like 2.73, 3.23, 3.42 and such.

look on this site some there is a site where you can get rebuild kits and gears for them. I have 2 9-bolts they are great rearends if you get some power out of your car and run slicks you will destroy a 10bolt.
